The paintings in this series were inspired by a residency in Suffolk, on the east coast of the UK. During this time, my aim was to explore the impact of climate change on the coastline, particularly the erosion caused by the elements. This region is also home to some of the rarest plant species, adding another layer of fragility to the landscape. Here there was time to experiment with new materials, yet staying close to my values for creating. Daily walks led me along the deep shingle beach where a number of rare plants survive despite the sometimes inhospitable conditions of the east coast and the north sea. I used dried roots and other found objects as drawing tools to inscribe marks into the surface of the work.
Each piece is built up through multiple layers of oil and cold wax, reflecting my deep connection to this place—a landscape I have returned to over many years.
